Michael J. Fox is a Canadian-American actor comedian author and film producer with a career spanning five decades. He is best known for his roles as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy (1985–1990) and as Alex P. Keaton in the American sitcom Family Ties (1982–1989) for which he won three Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award.
Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at age 29 and disclosed his condition to the public in 1998. He semi-retired from acting in 2000 as the symptoms of his disease became more severe. He has since founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation to fund research into a cure for Parkinson’s disease. He has also taken up acting again appearing in a number of films and television roles as well as serving as a guest voice actor in the animated series Stuart Little and Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
In 2010 Fox was inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame. That same year he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada one of the country’s highest civilian honors. Fox was born in Edmonton Alberta Canada on June 9 1961 to Phyllis (née Piper) an actress/payroll clerk and William Fox a police officer and Canadian Forces member. He has a brother Steven and a younger sister Kelli Fox who is also an actress.
