While Methuselah is the oldest alligator on record there are reports of even older animals. In the early 1900s an alligator in a Chicago zoo was said to be around 150 years old. And in the late 1800s an alligator in a New Orleans zoo was rumored to be over 200 years old.
If these reports are true it would mean that alligators can live to be quite old. However it is hard to know for sure because alligators do not have the same kind of growth rings that trees do. This makes it difficult to estimate their age exactly.
Still it is clear that alligators can live for many decades and are one of the oldest creatures on Earth.
