When we start counting the number of sounds in English we need to be careful to count only the distinct sounds. Another tricky case is the sound represented by the letter “r”. In some dialects of English the “r” sound is pronounced in words like “red” and “car”. But in other dialects the “r” sound is not pronounced. So which sound do we count?
For our purposes we’ll count the “r” sound as a separate sound from the /t/ sound. That means we’ll count the word “car” as having three sounds: /k/ + /a/ + /r/.
With those adjustments we can now get a fairly accurate count of the number of distinct sounds in English. By our reckoning there are 44 distinct sounds in English.
Of course this number is just an estimate. Some linguists might quibble with our choices of which sounds to count and which to ignore. But 44 is a good ballpark number for the number of distinct sounds in English.
