Alligator Alley is a 110-mile (180 km) section of Interstate 75 (I-75) in southern Florida that passes through the Everglades. It is the only section of I-75 that does not have a median divider. The Alley is also the only route through the Everglades National Park from the mainland of Florida.
The original Alligator Alley was a two-lane road that was built in the 1950s. It was paved with asphalt and had a maximum speed limit of 50 miles per hour (80 km/h). In 1971 the road was widened to four lanes and the speed limit was increased to 70 miles per hour (110 km/h).
In the 1980s Alligator Alley was extended westward to connect to I-75 near Naples Florida. The new section of the Alley is six lanes wide and has a maximum speed limit of 80 miles per hour (130 km/h).
Alligator Alley is one of the most dangerous roads in Florida. In 2017 there were 24 fatal accidents on the Alley which is a rate of 2.2 accidents per million vehicle miles traveled. This is significantly higher than the state average of 1.4 accidents per million vehicle miles traveled.

Second there are no median barriers which means that if a driver falls asleep or has a medical emergency they can easily cross into oncoming traffic.
