The ostrich is a large flightless bird native to Africa. It is the only living member of the genus Struthio which contains all the ostrich-like birds. The ostrich is distinctive in its appearance with a long neck and legs and can run at speeds of up to 70 km/h (43 mph). It is the largest living species of bird and lays the largest eggs of any living bird.
The ostrich’s diet consists mostly of plant matter though it also eats insects. It lives in nomadic groups of 5 to 50 birds. When threatened the ostrich will either hide itself by lying flat against the ground or will run away. If cornered it can attack with a kick of its powerful legs.
Mating and nesting usually occurs between March and May. Females lay 3 to 5 eggs which hatch after 40 to 45 days. The chicks are precocial and able to fend for themselves soon after hatching.
The ostrich is classified as a vulnerable species by the IUCN. It is hunted for its meat feathers and skin. The eggs are also collected for their shells which are used for various purposes.
