The bird world’s largest egg belongs to the ostrich. Clutching two to three ostrich eggs at a time the ostrich hen incubates them for approximately 42 days. One ostrich egg weighs about three pounds and is equivalent to 24 chicken eggs in terms of size and weight.
Ostriches are not the only birds that lay large eggs. The emu rhea and cassowary also lay eggs that are considerably larger than chicken eggs. These flightless birds however do not lay the world’s largest eggs. That record is held by the now-extinct elephant bird of Madagascar which laid eggs that weighed up to 20 pounds each!
While an ostrich egg is considerably larger than a chicken egg it takes a longer time to incubate. This is because the ostrich egg has a thicker shell. The ostrich eggshell is about 1/4 of an inch thick while a chicken eggshell is only 1/16 of an inch thick.
The ostrich egg’s large size and thick shell make it well suited for incubation. The thick shell helps to protect the developing embryo from being jostled too much. The large size of the egg also provides a large yolk which is a major source of food for the developing embryo.
The egg’s large size also makes it difficult for the mother to incubate. In order to sit on her eggs and keep them warm the ostrich hen must spread her legs wide apart. This exposes her to predators which can make incubation a dangerous time for the mother bird.
Despite the challenges of incubating such large eggs the ostrich hen is a diligent mother. She will carefully turn the eggs several times each day using her beak to help keep them warm.
After about 42 days of incubation the ostrich chicks will hatch. They will be covered in downy feathers and will be able to walk and run within a few hours. The chicks will stay close to their mother for protection from predators.
