Giving birth is a process that is completed in stages. There are three main stages of labor: farrowing delivery and afterbirth.
The process of labor usually begins within 24 hours of the sow’s water breaking. The sow will lie down and begin to exhibit nesting behaviors. She will become more aggressive and may even attack other pigs if they come too close.
The first stage of labor farrowing begins with the sow starting to push. She will continue to push for 30 to 60 minutes during which time the piglets will be born. The piglets are born covered in a waxy substance called vernix caseosa which helps protect their skin from the amniotic fluid.
After the piglets are born the sow will clean them off with her tongue. The piglets will then begin to search for a nipple to drink from. The sow will usually lie down during this time and will not move around much to avoid crushing the piglets.
The second stage of labor delivery occurs after the last piglet is born. The sow will then expel the placenta which is also known as the afterbirth. This stage of labor usually lasts for 10 to 30 minutes.
The sow will then stand up and begin to clean her teats. The piglets will also begin to explore their surroundings and will start to play with each other.
The third stage of labor afterbirth is the final stage of labor. During this time the sow will continue to clean her teats and the piglets will continue to explore their surroundings. Afterbirth usually lasts for 30 minutes to one hour.
