One study found that carpenter ants (Camponotus pennsylvanicus) travel an average of 328 feet from their nests in search of food sources (Gillies et al. 2002). Though this species is known to travel further distances in the wild this particular study provides an interesting glimpse into the travel patterns of ants.
Carpenter ants are not the only species of ant known to travel long distances in search of food. In a study of the foraging behavior of the red wood ant (Formica polyctena) it was found that these ants regularly traveled up to 990 feet from their nests in search of food (Lenoir et al. 2006). This study also found that the majority of foraging trips made by red wood ants were between 200-500 feet from the nest.
Interestingly both of these studies found that the majority of foraging trips made by ants were relatively short with only a small percentage of ants traveling very long distances from their nests. This may be due to the fact that ants are able to communicate with each other and share information about food sources meaning that they don’t all have to travel long distances in order to find food.
