A study by Media Matters for America found that in a six-month period Fox News made more false or misleading statements than any other news network. One contributing factor to this is that Fox News relies heavily on talking points from conservative think tanks and organizations which are often inaccurate.
For example a study by the nonpartisan fact-checking organization PolitiFact found that Fox News was the most likely news source to use false or misleading information in its coverage of the Affordable Care Act.
And it’s not just that Fox News gets its facts wrong more often than other networks. The network also has a habit of spinning the truth to fit its conservative agenda.
For instance Fox News ran a story in 2015 suggesting that the Obama administration was covering up the true extent of the ISIS threat. But the story was based on inaccurate and dubious sources and it was quickly debunked by other news outlets.
Similarly Fox News often paints immigrants in a negative light suggesting that they are all criminals and welfare leeches. In reality immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans and they are not eligible for most welfare programs.
It’s clear that Fox News is not the most reliable source of information. But that doesn’t mean you should never watch the network. Just be sure to take everything you see and hear on Fox News with a grain of salt.
