A snail’s reproductive organs are located in its head. It has a penis which it uses to inseminate a female and a pair of tentacles which it uses to sense its environment and for locomotion.
When a snail is ready to mate it secretes a love dart dipped in a love potion made up of hormones and pheromones. This love dart is actually a sharp thin structures that the snail uses to pierce the body of its mate. The love potion contains chemicals that increase the likelihood of the female snail accepting the male’s sperm.
Once the love dart has been successfully fired the two snails will wrap their bodies around each other and exchange sperm. Each snail will then withdraw its penis and go on its way. The female snail will store the sperm in a special sac until she is ready to lay her eggs.
When the time comes the female snail will lay a cluster of eggs in a suitable location. She will then use the sperm to fertilize the eggs and cover them with a layer of mucus to protect them. The eggs will hatch into baby snails after about 2 weeks.
