According to Ovid in his Metamorphoses the transformation of a fox into an elephant is accomplished by the following steps:
“First you take a fox and you skin it. Then you stretch the skin over a frame in the shape of an elephant. Then you stuff the skin with hay and finally you paint the skin to look like an elephant.
The results according to Ovid are not always perfect:
“Sometimes the legs are too short or the neck is too long. But if you keep at it you’ll eventually get it right.”
There are of course other ways to turn a fox into an elephant. For example you could use genetic engineering to insert elephant DNA into the fox’s genome or you could use nanotechnology to build an elephant-shaped robot from the ground up. But the Ovidian method while perhaps not the simplest is certainly the most poetic.
