Wandering the African savannah the ostrich is the world’s largest bird. These flightless birds weigh in at a whopping 150 to 200 pounds and can grow up to nine feet tall! Even their eggs are the largest of any bird weighing in at three pounds each. All of this size may make them look intimidating but they are actually quite gentle and shy.
Ostriches are omnivores which means they will eat just about anything. Their diet includes insects lizards rodents and plants. One of their favorite foods is the ostrich egg! When they are not busy looking for food ostriches spend their time preening their feathers and lounging in the sun.
So how do ostriches catch their food?
For the most part ostriches use their feet and legs to catch food. Their long legs allow them to cover a lot of ground quickly which is helpful when chasing down prey. Their feet are also equipped with sharp claws that can help them catch and kill their prey.
Ostriches also use their beaks to help them find food. Their beaks are very sensitive and can detect the slightest movement. This comes in handy when they are looking for small prey like insects.
Lastly ostriches use theirwings to help them catch food. While they cannot fly their wings are very powerful. They use them to create wind gusts that can knock down prey or to scare away predators.
