A study published in 2012 in the journal Science provides some clues. Using CT scans the researchers were able to map out the three-dimensional structure of an ant colony for the first time. What they found was that the colony went down as far as 10 meters with the majority of the ant activity happening between 2 and 4 meters below ground.
While this depth might seem like a lot it’s actually not that surprising. Ants need to be able to find food and water and they need to be able to avoid predators. By going deep underground they can do both of these things.
The main thing that the study showed was that the deeper parts of the colony were used for storage. These areas were filled with food reserves and pupae which are ants that are in the process of developing into adults. The researchers speculate that the deeper areas of the colony are used for these purposes because they are more protected from the outside world.
