Today is a sad day for fans of Michael J. Fox. The actor who is best known for his roles in the “Back to the Future” trilogy and the television series “Spin City” has passed away at the age of 56.
Fox began his acting career in the 1970s appearing in small roles on Canadian television. He first gained international attention for his role as Alex P. Keaton on the NBC sitcom “Family Ties” which ran from 1982 to 1989. He won three Emmy Awards for his work on the show.
In 1985 Fox starred in the first “Back to the Future” movie as Marty McFly a teenager who is sent back in time to the 1950s. The movie was a huge success and Fox reprised his role in the sequels “Back to the Future II” (1989) and “Back to the Future III” (1990).
In the 1990s Fox starred in the ABC comedy “Spin City” as Deputy Mayor Mike Flaherty. He won a Golden Globe Award for his work on the show which ran for six seasons from 1996 to 2002.
In 2006 Fox announced that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease a neurological condition that affects movement. He became an advocate for others with the condition and raised awareness of the disease through his work with the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Fox continued to act after his diagnosis appearing in guest roles on television shows and in the movies “The Frighteners” (1996) “Stuart Little” (1999) and “The Michael J. Fox Show” (2013) a short-lived television series that was loosely based on his life.
His final movie role was in the 2015 drama “Daniel Isn’t Real.”
Fox’s passing is a great loss for the entertainment world and he will be remembered for his amazing body of work and his dedication to raising awareness of Parkinson’s disease.
