Adam Ant was born on November 3 1954 in London England as Stuart Leslie Goddard. He is a singer songwriter and actor. He rose to fame as the lead singer of new wave band Adam and the Ants and later as a solo artist scoring ten UK top ten hits from 1980 to 1983 including three UK No. 1 singles. He has also worked as an actor appearing in over two dozen films and television episodes from 1985 to 2003.

In 2012 he was ranked number 56 in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. In 2015 Goddard was presented with an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.

Adam Ant was born Stuart Leslie Goddard in Marylebone London on 3 November 1954 the son of Leslie Goddard a chauffeur and Doris (née Yorke) a dressmaker. His grandfather Stanley Yorke was born in Kent and his grandmother Emily (née Churchill) in Somerset. He was the third of four children; his older sister Linda and younger brother Andy were born in England while his younger sister Louise was born in France.

Adam’s parents separated when he was four and divorced two years later. His mother remarried and he and his siblings took their stepfather’s surname Hayward. Through his mother’s second marriage Adam inherited a half-brother James Hayashi.

Adam was educated atprimary school in Dorset Square and then at secondary school in Westminster. He attended Hornsey College of Art but did not complete his degree.

In 1971 aged 17 Goddard changed his name to Adam Ant. In 1974 he formed the band The Ants with guitarist Lester Square and drummer Andy Warren.

Prior to his musical career Adam worked as a window dresser for the London fashion store Heals.

Adam and The Ants released their debut album Dirk Wears White Sox in 1979. The album was not a commercial success but the band’s next release Kings of the Wild Frontier (1980) made Adam a household name. The album reached No. 1 in the UK and spawned the hit singles “Dog Eat Dog” and the title track.

Adam and The Ants disbanded in 1982 and Adam embarked on a solo career. His first solo album Friend or Foe (1982) reached No. 1 in the UK and produced the hit singles “Goody Two Shoes” and “Strip”.

In March 1983 Adam Ant embarked on his first solo tour of the UK which was successful enough to warrant a live album titled Adam Ant Is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter. The album reached No. 2 in the UK and the single “Puss ‘n Boots” reached No. 1.

In December 1983 Adam released his fourth studio album Vive Le Rock which again reached No. 2 in the UK. The album’s title track was a No. 1 hit in France.

Adam Ant’s next album Manners & Physique (1990) was his first album in seven years. The album was not as successful as his previous releases but the single “Room at the Top” reached No. 15 in the UK.

Adam Ant’s most recent album is 2012’s Adam Ant & The Good The Mad and the Lovely Posse. The album was crowdfunded through PledgeMusic and reached its target in just four days.

Adam Ant is currently working on new material with his band The Good The Mad and The Lovely Posse.
