Don “The Snake” Prudhomme is a former NHRA Funny Car champion who won four championships in his career. He is also a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.
Prudhomme started his career in drag racing in the early 1960s driving a gas dragster called the “American Indian” which he built himself. He soon began racing Funny Cars and in 1965 he won his first NHRA national event in Phoenix Arizona.
Prudhomme continued to race successfully throughout the 1960s and 1970s winning a total of nine NHRA national events. In 1976 he became the first driver to win the NHRA Funny Car championship and he went on to win the title three more times in 1977 1978 and 1979.
In 1980 Prudhomme retired from drag racing but he made a brief comeback in 1986 driving a Funny Car for the old Snake Racing team. He then retired for good in 1987.
Prudhomme has been inducted into both the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America and the NHRA Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
