According to the San Diego Zoo ostriches are the largest living bird in the world. They can weigh up to 350 pounds and stand up to nine feet tall. But despite their size these birds are fast! They can run up to 43 miles per hour.
Ostriches are native to Africa and live in dry open habitats such as savannas woodlands and deserts. These birds are interesting creatures and have a number of unique features. For example they have two toes on each foot which helps them to run quickly. And their eyes are the largest of any land vertebrate which gives them great vision.
Interestingly ostriches are not able to fly. However they make up for this by being excellent runners. In fact they are the fastest two-legged animal on the planet!
One of the most well-known facts about ostriches is that they stick their heads in the sand when they are scared. However this is actually a myth! Ostriches do sometimes lie down on the ground and put their heads down but this is more likely due to the bird being tired rather than scared.
If you’re ever lucky enough to see an ostrich in the wild you’ll definitely want to keep your distance. These birds are known to be quite aggressive and they have been known to kill humans with their powerful legs. So it’s best to admire these birds from a safe distance!
