Epinephrine is a hormone and neurotransmitter that is released by the adrenal gland in response to stress. It increases heart rate and blood pressure and also has a direct effect on the body’s sympathetic nervous system.
While the exact mechanism by which epinephrine increases heart rate is not fully understood it is known that the hormone binds to receptors on the heart which in turn triggers a series of events that lead to an increase in heart rate.

Whatever the exact mechanism it is clear that epinephrine plays an important role in the body’s response to stress and that it increases heart rate.
