Ostriches are interesting creatures- they are the largest bird in the world and can run up to 40 miles per hour. But one of their most famous behaviors is that when they feel threatened they will stick their heads in the sand and pretend to be invisible.
This behavior has led to the popular saying “to stick one’s head in the sand” meaning to refuse to face reality or admit that something is happening.
Interestingly ostriches do not actually bury their heads in the sand. When they feel threatened they will lower their heads to the ground and lay their necks flat making it appear as if their head is buried.
There are a few theories as to why ostriches behave in this way. One theory is that they think if they can’t see the predator the predator can’t see them.
Another theory is that by lying low to the ground they are camouflage themselves and blend in with their surroundings.
Whatever the reason this behavior is fascinating and has led to many interesting stories and sayings.
