… anything?
It’s hard to say since foxes are notoriously sly creatures. But if we’re to believe the popular saying then the fox might just have something important to say.
The phrase “the fox knows many things but the hedgehog knows one big thing” is often attributed to Greek poet Archilochus and it’s often used to describe people who are either adaptable and versatile (like the fox) or focused and single-minded (like the hedgehog).
So what does this have to do with the fox saying anything?
Well it could be interpreted as meaning that the fox is wise because it knows many things while the hedgehog is only knowledgeable about one thing. Or it could mean that the fox is cunning and manipulative because it knows how to make use of its knowledge while the hedgehog is just straightforward and honest.
Either way it seems that the fox has an advantage over the hedgehog in terms of both wisdom and wit. And if the fox does indeed have something to say then we should probably listen.
