In a statement to Media Matters a Fox News spokesperson said: “We don’t want to turn our back on the community aspect of social media but the trolling has gotten so bad that we feel it’s best to disable comments on our stories for now.”
The spokesperson went on to say that Fox News is “constantly evaluating” its social media strategy and that the decision to turn off comments could be reversed in the future.
Many other news organizations including The Washington Post The Guardian and NPR have also disabled comments on some or all of their stories. Some like The Guardian have experimented with moderating comments before publishing them while others like NPR have simply stopped allowing comments altogether.
The reasons given by these news organizations for disabling comments are similar to those given by Fox News: the desire to avoid abusive and harassing comments. But some news organizations have also cited the need to focus on other more effective ways to engage with readers like social media.
The trend of news organizations disabling comments on their stories is likely to continue as the fight against online harassment and abuse shows no signs of slowing down.
