De’Aaron Fox

De’Aaron Fox is an American professional basketball player for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats. He was considered one of the best point guards in the 2017 NBA draft. Fox was selected with the fifth overall pick in the draft by the Kings.

Early life

Fox was born in New Orleans Louisiana. His father Aaron Fox played basketball at the University of Houston and his mother Lorraine Stephens is a high school counselor. He has two older sisters one older brother and one younger sister. When he was two years old his family moved to Baton Rouge Louisiana. Fox played his AAU basketball for the Baton Rouge Red Stick Reebok team. In high school he attended Cypress Lakes High School in Katy Texas. As a freshman in 2012–13 he averaged 17.3 points 5.0 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game. He was named a freshman All-American by MaxPreps.

As a sophomore in 2013–14 Fox averaged 19.2 points 5.0 assists and 6.7 rebounds per game. He led his team to the Class 5A state semifinals. He was named a sophomore All-American by MaxPreps.

As a junior in 2014–15 Fox averaged 24.5 points 6.8 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game. He was named a junior All-American by MaxPreps. He was also named a McDonald’s All-American.

As a senior in 2015–16 Fox averaged 28.1 points 7.6 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game. He was named a senior All-American by MaxPreps. He was also named a McDonald’s All-American.

Fox playing for Kentucky in 2017

In November 2015 Fox committed to playing college basketball for Kentucky over offers from Kansas Louisville and LSU.

As a freshman at Kentucky in 2016–17 Fox averaged 16.7 points 4.6 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game. He was named to the SEC All-Freshman team. He helped lead Kentucky to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

Professional career

On June 22 2017 Fox was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the fifth overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft. He was the first Kentucky player to be drafted in the lottery since Anthony Davis in 2012.

On July 8 2017 Fox signed his rookie scale contract with the Kings. He made his debut for the Kings in their season opener on October 18 2017 scoring 10 points in a 102–99 loss to the Houston Rockets. On November 29 2017 he scored a then career-high 28 points in a 127–123 overtime win over the Brooklyn Nets. On December 9 2017 he scored a career-high 29 points in a 104–98 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. On February 16 2018 he had a triple-double with 19 points 10 assists and 10 rebounds in a 113–106 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. It was the Kings’ first triple-double since Jason Williams in 2003. In February Fox was named Western Conference Rookie of the Month after averaging 16.9 points 5.6 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game in 14 games.

On March 7 2018 Fox scored a career-high 31 points in a 107–99 win over the Dallas Mavericks. On April 11 2018 he was ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a left quadriceps injury. Fox finished his rookie season averaging 11.6 points 4.4 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game.

In the 2018–19 season Fox began the season as the Kings’ starting point guard. On November 5 2018 he scored a then career-high 32 points in a 113–108 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. In December he was named Western Conference Rookie of the Month after averaging 19.2 points 5.9 assists 3.7 rebounds and 1.39 steals per game in 15 games. On December 23 2018 Fox had a career-high 16 assists in a 121–108 win over the Denver Nuggets. On January 7 2019 he scored a career-high 33 points in a 114–110 win over the Lakers. On February 7 2019 he was named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for the second time after averaging 20.3 points 7.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game in 15 games. Fox helped the Kings end a 13-year playoff drought after finishing the season 39–43. In the playoffs the Kings faced the San Antonio Spurs in the first round and lost in seven games. Fox averaged 21.4 points 7.4 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game in the series.

In the 2019–20 season Fox averaged 17.3 points 7.3 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. He was also named the Kings’ Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player.

On December 27 2020 Fox scored a career-high 40 points in a 119–118 overtime loss to the Spurs. On January 19 2021 he scored 35 points in a 111–106 win over the Indiana Pacers. On January 23 2021 he scored 39 points in a 118–113 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. On February 2 2021 Fox scored 31 points in a 121–119 win over the New Orleans Pelicans his fourth 30-point game of the season.
