The internet is rife with articles claiming that ostriches are the fastest land animal capable of reaching speeds in excess of 70 mph. But how fast can they really run? And could a human ever hope to outrun one?
First a bit of background on ostriches. These massive birds are native to Africa and can weigh up to 345 pounds. They’re the largest living member of the bird family and their long legs can measure up to 7 feet in length. Ostriches also have long necks and can grow up to 9 feet tall.
When it comes to speed ostriches are indeed fast. They can reach top speeds of 45 mph in short bursts and can maintain a speed of 30 mph over long distances. But there are a few things to keep in mind when considering just how fast these birds can run.
For one ostriches don’t usually reach their top speeds in open areas. They’re more likely to reach high speeds when running downhill or chasing prey. So could a human ever hope to outrun an ostrich?
In short no. Ostriches are simply too fast for most humans to keep up with. Even the fastest runners in the world would have a difficult time keeping up with an ostrich over any significant distance.
Of course there are always exceptions to the rule. If you happen to be an Olympic-level sprinter you might be able to outrun an ostrich for a short distance. But for the average person trying to outrun an ostrich is a recipe for disaster.
So if you ever find yourself in a situation where you’re being chased by an ostrich your best bet is to simply try and outlast the bird. Ostriches can only maintain their top speed for a minute or so before they need to rest. If you can keep running for longer than that chances are you’ll be able to outrun the ostrich in the long run.
