There are many reasons why a human could beat an ostrich in a race. For one humans are much faster than ostriches. Ostriches can run up to 45 miles per hour but the world record for the 100 meter dash is held by a human who ran it in 9.58 seconds. That’s over four times as fast!
But humans don’t just have an advantage in speed. We’re also much more maneuverable than ostriches. We can change directions quickly and easily while ostriches have to put on the brakes and turn around in a wide arc. In a race this would give the human runner a big advantage.
But there’s another reason why humans could beat ostriches in a race: we’re smarter. Ostriches are fast and they can run for a long time but they’re not very good at thinking. They can’t change their course mid-race and they’re not very good at avoiding obstacles. Humans on the other hand are very good at planning and problem-solving. We would be able to use our intelligence to plan a route that avoids obstacles and to make sure we stay on course.
So while an ostrich might be able to outrun a human for a short distance in a long race the human would be the clear winner. intelligence and maneuverability would give us a huge advantage.
