It’s been a little over a year since I last checked in with Fleet Foxes. In that time the band has released two excellent singles “Crack-Up” and “Fools Errand” and an album to match. I’ve been a fan of the band since their 2008 debut and I’m happy to say that they’ve only gotten better with age.
“Can I Believe You” is the latest single from Fleet Foxes and it’s a gorgeous piece of work. The song opens with a simple guitar line and a delicate vocal from Robin Pecknold. The rest of the band enters slowly adding layers of sound as the song progresses. The result is a lush beautiful track that feels both classic and modern at the same time.
The lyrics to “Can I Believe You” are just as lovely as the music. The song is about loss and grief and the hope that comes with moving on. The first verse is particularly poignant:
“I can’t believe you’re gone
It’s like you never existed
You were my everything
And now you’re nothing
I can’t believe you’re gone
I can’t believe you’re gone
I can’t believe you’re gone”
The chorus is more hopeful with Pecknold singing about the possibility of seeing his lost loved one again. It’s a moment of light in an otherwise sad song and it’s absolutely gorgeous.
“Can I Believe You” is a stunning track from Fleet Foxes and it’s just the latest example of the band’s incredible talent. If you haven’t already I urge you to check out their new album Crack-Up. It’s one of the best albums of the year and it’s sure to please fans of Fleet Foxes old and new.
