It’s a popular belief that an ostrich can kill a lion with a single kick of its powerful legs. While there’s no denying that Ostriches are incredibly strong and fast and their legs are certainly deadly weapons it’s unlikely that they could actually kill a lion with one kick.
Ostriches are native to Africa where they live in open savannahs woodlands and deserts. They are the largest bird in the world and can grow up to 9 feet tall and weigh up to 350 pounds. Their long legs can cover up to 16 feet in a single stride and they can run up to 43 miles per hour.
Their legs are so strong that they can easily kill a human with a single kick. In fact there have been several reports of people being killed by Ostriches. In one case a farmer in Zimbabwe was kicked to death by an Ostrich after he tried to chase it off his property.
While Ostriches are certainly formidable creatures it’s unlikely that they could kill a lion with a single kick. Lions are much larger than Ostriches weighing up to 550 pounds. They are also proficient hunters and have sharp claws and teeth that can inflict serious damage.
If an Ostrich were to kick a lion in the head it might stun or knock out the big cat but it’s unlikely to kill it outright. So while an Ostrich could certainly hurt a lion with its powerful legs it’s unlikely that it could kill one.
