In an effort to get rid of raccoons, you may have considered ammonia for wildlife control. However, ammonia is toxic and corrosive, and it may endanger your plants, pets, and home structure. In addition, ammonia can be hazardous to your children and pets. If you plan to use ammonia for wildlife control, you should not do it yourself, as this method poses serious health risks.
Another natural way to repel raccoons is to soak rags in ammonia and place them around your yard. Raccoons do not like the smell of ammonia, so it’s a good idea to put a few in strategic places around your home to keep them away. In addition to rags, you can also place ammonia-soaked tennis balls around your yard. These tennis balls will emit a foul odor, which raccoons cannot stand.
A rag soaked in ammonia can be placed near an entrance to keep raccoons out of your home. A saucer of ammonia soaked in vinegar or a rag dipped in it can be placed near the entry point. Raccoons hate the smell of ammonia, so leaving a small saucer of the chemical near their den is likely to scare them away. The smell is a strong enough deterrent that they will leave your home within 48 hours.
Raccoons don’t pee in your main bedding area. However, they do pee in the attic. The ammonia smell in the rags can fool them into thinking that the area is filthy.
