The Crimes of Grindelwald is rated PG-13 for “sequences of fantasy violence some language and brief suggestive material.”
This is the second installment in the Fantastic Beasts series and takes place in 1927. The story follows Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he tries to stop the evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) from raising an army of wizards to rule over non-magical beings.
While the first movie was rated PG-13 for “some fantasy violence” this sequel ups the ante with more intense action sequences. There is also more language than in the first film as well as some brief suggestive material.
So why was this movie given a PG-13 rating?
The main reason is likely the increase in violence. There are several scenes where characters are killed or almost killed. This is more intense than the fantasy violence in the first movie.
The language is also a factor. While there is no use of profanity there are a few instances of characters using offensive language.
And finally the brief suggestive material is likely referring to a scene in which a character is seen shirtless.
