Kermit the Frog is a Muppet character created and originally performed by Jim Henson. Introduced in 1955 Kermit serves as the straight man protagonist of numerous Muppet productions most notably as the host of The Muppet Show and as a news anchor on Sesame Street. Henson was known for his work with the Muppets and Kermit was his most well-known character.
Kermit the Frog was created in 1955 by Jim Henson. Henson was a puppeteer who had created several successful puppet characters including Rowlf the Dog and Ernie on Sesame Street. Kermit was originally designed as a lizard-like creature but Henson decided to make him a frog after seeing a picture of a frog in a child’s book.
Kermit made his debut on Sam and Friends a puppet show that aired on WRC-TV in Washington D.C. In this early appearance Kermit was simply a puppet with no voice or personality. He later appeared on Sesame Street where he became a beloved character. Kermit served as a news anchor interviewer and occasional host of the show.
In 1976 Henson debuted The Muppet Show a variety show that featured Kermit as the host. The Muppet Show was a huge success and Kermit became a household name. He also appeared in several films including The Muppet Movie (1979) The Great Muppet Caper (1981) and The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984).
In 1990 Henson died unexpectedly at the age of 53. Kermit was taken over by Steve Whitmire who has voiced and performed the character since then. Kermit has continued to appear in new Muppet productions including several films and the recent television series The Muppets (2015-2016).
