According to Snakes on a Plane producer Neal Moritz the project was conceived in August 2005 when he was on a plane that was delayed due to a snake being loose on the plane. The concept for the film was inspired by the 1950s B-movie Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. Moritz pitched the idea to New Line Cinema who agreed to finance the film.
The screenplay for Snakes on a Plane was written by David Dalessandro John Heffernan and Sheldon Turner with an uncredited rewrite by director David R. Ellis. The film was directed by Ellis and stars Samuel L. Jackson.
Principal photography took place in Los Angeles and Hawaii in July and August 2006. The film was released in the United States on August 18 2006 and received mixed reviews from critics. However it was a box office success grossing over $62 million worldwide.
A sequel Snakes on a Plane 2: Anacondas was released direct-to-video in 2009.
