The Curious George books were written by Margret and H.A. Rey and first published in 1941. The authors were inspired by a real-life monkey named Hans who they saw in a zoo in Lima Peru.
Hans was a small monkey with light-colored fur and a long tail. He was part of a species called the capuchin monkey which is also sometimes called the organ grinder monkey.
Capuchin monkeys are found in Central and South America and they are known for their intelligence. They are also known for being curious and mischievous which may be why the Rey brothers chose a capuchin monkey as the star of their books.
There are several other species of monkey that are commonly mistaken for Curious George including the rhesus macaque and the marmoset. But if you take a closer look you can see that Curious George is definitely a capuchin monkey.
