Zootopia is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated buddy comedy-adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film was directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore co-directed by Jared Bush and stars Ginnifer Goodwin Jason Bateman Idris Elba Jenny Slate Nate Torrence Bonnie Hunt Don Lake Tommy Chong J.K. Simmons Octavia Spencer Alan Tudyk and Shakira. The film follows a rookie rabbit police officer and a cynical fox con artist as they uncover a conspiracy involving the disappearance of predators.
Zootopia was conceived in 2013 when Howard began developing an animal-themed project inspired by his childhood love of Disney’s Robin Hood (1973) and The Rescuers (1977). When he pitched the idea to John Lasseter the head of Walt Disney Animation Studios Lasseter immediately green-lit the project. The story follows Judy Hopps a female rabbit who becomes the first rabbit to join the Zootopia police force and is assigned to solve the case of the missing otters. The film was released in Disney Digital 3D RealD 3D IMAX 3D and conventional theaters in the United States on March 4 2016.
The film received positive reviews with critics praising its animation voice acting characters humor soundtrack and themes about prejudice and diversity. It grossed over $1 billion worldwide making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2016 and the 32nd-highest-grossing film of all time. The film won the Academy Award Golden Globe Critics’ Choice Movie Award and Annie Award for Best Animated Feature Film. A sequel tentatively titled Zootopia 2 is scheduled to be released on July 30 2021.
