The Meg is a 2018 American science fiction thriller film directed by Jon Turteltaub with a screenplay by Dean Georgaris Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber based on the 1997 book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten. The film stars Jason Statham Li Bingbing Rainn Wilson Ruby Rose Winston Chao and Cliff Curtis and follows a group of scientists who encounter a 75-foot-long (23 m) megalodon shark while on a rescue mission to save trapped sailors from a sunken submersible.

In his review for TheWrap Will Ashton wrote “The Meg has enough cheesy fun and effective scares to make it a passable escapist summer flick albeit one that’s forgettable in every way imaginable.” Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com gave the film two out of four stars saying it was “a watchable throwback to the schlocky creature features of the 1950s”. Writing for The Hollywood Reporter David Rooney called the film “a pleasantly diverting B-movie” with “solidly entertaining set pieces”.
In a more mixed review Variety’s Owen Gleiberman praised the film’s “visually intoxicating” underwater sequences but criticized the “leaden” dialogue writing that the film “feels like it’s been assembled from the leftovers of a dozen other movies”. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave the film one and a half stars out of four calling it “a dumbfoundingly inept monster mash” that is “so bad it’s good”.
The Meg was nominated for five Golden Raspberry Awards including Worst Picture and Worst Director but failed to win any. The film was also nominated for five Saturn Awards including Best Science Fiction Film.
