Scott of The New York Times also criticized the film’s faithfulness to the book writing that the film is “not especially interested in staying true to the spirit of Dr. Seuss.”
Some critics also criticized the Grinch’s design. Writing for Entertainment Weekly Lisa Schwarzbaum said that the Grinch “looks less like a Seuss creation than like some kind of lab experiment gone awry.” Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly also criticized the Grinch’s design writing that he “looks like he was put together by Dr. Moreau.”
