Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange 2 is rated PG-13 for violence and intense sequences of action. References to the mystical and magical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe abound and while some may find the content a little intense there’s no doubt that Doctor Strange 2 is a fun and wild ride.
The first Doctor Strange was a surprise hit grossing over $677 million worldwide. It was praised for its inventive visuals mind-bending action sequences and performances from Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Doctor Strange and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One.
While the first film was light on references to the wider MCU Doctor Strange 2 makes them front and center. The film opens with Doctor Strange (Cumberbatch) investigating a series of mystical disturbances around the world. In the process he comes into conflict with a powerful sorcerer known as Morgana (Rachel McAdams).
Morgana is revealed to be a student of the Ancient One who was killed in the first film. She blames Doctor Strange for her death and wants revenge. The two face off in a series of spectacular battles which take them to all corners of the globe.
Along the way Doctor Strange is aided by his friends and allies including Wong (Benedict Wong) and Cumberbatch’s real-life wife Sophie Hunter.
While the action and visuals are as impressive as ever it’s the references to the wider MCU that will really excite fans. Doctor Strange 2 is crammed with Easter eggs and nods to other Marvel properties including the comics TV shows and films.
One of the most intriguing references is to the multiverse. In the comics the multiverse is a vast collection of alternate universes each with its own version of reality. This concept was hinted at in the first Doctor Strange film and is explored further in the sequel.
The multiverse is also the setting for one of the most anticipated scenes in the film a team-up between Doctor Strange and another Sorcerer Supreme Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Loki is now the ruler of his own universe and the two sorcerers must put aside their differences to stop Morgana.
This team-up is just one of the many highlights of Doctor Strange 2 which is a must-see for Marvel fans.
