The net reproduction rate is the average number of daughters that a female will have over her lifetime. It is a direct measure of population growth. The higher the net reproduction rate the faster the population will grow.
The net reproduction rate can be calculated using the following formula:
R0 = (Females age 15-19) (Females age 20-24) (Females age 25-29) (Females age 30-34)
__________________________________________________________
(Number of women age 15-49) (Number of women age 15-49)
The age groups in the numerator are the age groups of childbearing women. The age groups in the denominator are the age groups of all women.
For example suppose we want to calculate the net reproduction rate for a country with the following population:
Females age 15-19: 1000
Females age 20-24: 1200
Females age 25-29: 1400
Females age 30-34: 1600
Number of women age 15-49: 6000
R0 = (1000) (1200) (1400) (1600)
__________________________________________________________
(6000) (6000)
R0 = 1.0
This means that on average each woman will have one daughter over her lifetime.
What is the net reproduction rate?
The net reproduction rate is the average number of children that a woman will have in her lifetime.
