Blind Frog Ranch is one of the largest working ranches in North America. The sprawling property covers more than 1 million acres of land in northeastern Nevada near the town of Elko. The ranch is home to more than 10000 head of cattle and 500 horses. The land includes mountains valleys forests lakes and meadows.
The ranch was founded in 1882 by John C. “Jack” Fletcher a Canadian-born cowboy and prospector. Fletcher built a small cabin and corral at the ranch’s current location. He soon began running cattle on the property and headquartered his operation there.
In the early years the ranch was primarily a cattle operation. The cattle were herded on horseback and had to be moved often to find fresh grazing land. The ranch hands also had to contend with rustlers and outlaws who would steal the cattle.
The ranch grew steadily over the years and changed hands several times. In the early 1900s the property was owned by a syndicate of investors from San Francisco. The ranch was then sold to cattleman W.T.W. Blanding in 1916. Blanding ran the ranch as a cow-calf operation meaning he raised calves to be sold for beef.
In the early 1920s the ranch was purchased by a group of investors led by J.W. Toole. Toole used the ranch as a base for his mining operations in the area. He also built a large mansion on the property which is now used as a guest house.
In the late 1920s the ranch was sold to oilman Harry Sinclair. Sinclair used the ranch to graze his cattle while he drilled for oil on the property. He was unsuccessful in finding oil but he did find a large deposit of natural gas.
In the 1930s the ranch was purchased by J.R. Simplot a businessman from Boise Idaho. Simplot expanded the ranch’s cattle operation and also built a large potato processing plant on the property. The ranch continued to be a working cattle ranch and potato farm into the 21st century.
Today the ranch is owned by a family trust. The current manager is John C. “Jack” Fletcher the great-grandson of the ranch’s founder. The ranch is still a working cattle ranch and potato farm. It also includes a guest ranch which offers lodging horseback riding and other activities.
