Snake oil is a term that is used to describe a product that is ineffective and/or fraudulent. The term originated in the early 1800s when frontier doctors would travel from town to town peddling their wares. These doctors would often times sell a potion or elixir that they claimed could cure just about anything. In reality these snake oil salesman were nothing more than con artists selling fake remedies to unsuspecting people.

The term “snake oil” is believed to have originated with the Chinese who used snake oil to treat joint pain. The oil was made by boiling the skin of snakes in water. This concoction was then rubbed on the affected area to relieve pain. There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that snake oil can relieve pain but there are some who swear by its efficacy.

So what about today? Is there such a thing as snake oil? Unfortunately the answer is yes. There are still people out there selling bogus products that they claim can cure everything from cancer to the common cold. Thankfully we now have the internet and other resources that we can use to do our own research before we buy anything.
