Do People Live On Snake Island

No people do not live on Snake Island. It is uninhabited by humans although there are numerous stories of people who have tried to live there only to be driven out by the large number of snakes. The snakes on the island are actually what give it its name as there are an estimated 4000 to 5000 snakes living there. That’s a ratio of about one snake per square meter. And yes they are all venomous.

The island is located off the coast of Brazil in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s about 20 miles from the city of Sao Paulo and is part of the Sergipe state. The island is only about 4 miles long and 3/4 of a mile wide.

So why don’t people live on the island? Well as mentioned it’s because of the snakes. The snakes are actually golden lancehead pit vipers which are among the most venomous snakes in the world. Their venom is so potent that it can melt human flesh and if not treated quickly will result in death.

In the 1930s a man named Antenor Vila Nova attempted to live on the island and harvest snake venom. He was able to do so for a few months but eventually succumbed to a snake bite himself. His body was never found.

In the early 1950s another man named Jofre Rocha Miranda tried to establish a snake farm on the island. However he too was bitten by a snake and died.
