Do bears eat snakes? It’s a question that has long piqued the curiosity of bear enthusiasts and snake aficionados alike. While there are no definitive studies on the subject there are a few observations that suggest that bears may on occasion eat snakes.
In 2010 a bear in Florida was caught on camera eating a six-foot long python. This is the only known instance of a bear eating a snake in the wild but it’s not the only time it’s been seen.
In 2015 a man in Canada witnessed a black bear killing and eating a snake. He said the bear grabbed the snake with its mouth shook it like a rag doll then bit down on the snake’s head and started to eat it.
There have also been reports of captive bears eating snakes. In one case a captive bear in a zoo ate a rattlesnake that had been put in its enclosure.
So do bears eat snakes? It’s hard to say for sure but it seems that they may occasionally do so.
