Are Garter Snakes Territorial

Garter snakes are not territorial animals. They are known to be very communal often sharing dens and basking spots. However there are some recorded instances of garter snakes being territorial. In one study a single garter snake was observed chasing away other snakes from its den. The snake would hiss and strike at the other snakes until they left the area. It is thought that this behavior is exhibited when the garter snake is trying to protect its young.
