Frog Anatomy
A frog has a wide mouth large eyes and a short squat body. Its skin is moist and covered with mucus which helps it to avoid getting wet and keeps its body temperature constant. Frogs have four legs which they use for jumping and swimming. Their hind legs are much longer than their front legs and are very powerful allowing them to make great leaps. Each of a frog’s feet has four toes which are webbed to help the frog swim.
The inside of a frog’s mouth is lined with sticky pads which help it to catch insects. Frogs eat insects spiders and other small animals. They use their long sticky tongue to catch their prey.
Frogs are amphibians which means that they can live in both water and on land. They spend most of their time in water where they are less likely to be eaten by predators. When it rains frogs often come out onto land to mate and lay their eggs.
Frogs lay their eggs in water. The eggs hatch into tadpoles which are small legless creatures with gills. Tadpoles grow slowly and they eventually develop legs and lose their gills. At this point they are transformed into young frogs.
Frogs are found all over the world in both warm and cold climates. Some species of frogs can even survive in the desert. Frogs are an important part of the ecosystem because they eat insects which helps to control the insect population.
